Case Study: 1910 Storefront in Tribeca Historical District

Historical Windows was contracted to furnish and install 6 storefront bays in a ground floor apartment matching the design specifications and profiles provided by the building architect and approved by the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission.

1910 Loft, Tribeca Historical District

Challenge:

Historical Windows was contracted to furnish and install 6 storefront bays in a ground floor apartment matching the design specifications and profiles provided by the building architect and approved by the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission.  Extensive interior work was also required.

Solution:

We used a Parrett Windows & Doors custom storefront fabricated with South American Mahogany, as specified by the architect as well as a custom mortise assembly. We collaborated with a NYS licensed structural engineer to design an anchoring fastener schedule and worked with our ironworks specialist to install structural steel framing to support each bay.  Due to the weight of the units, special handling equipment was required to get the storefront windows in place.  The interior walls were rebuilt, insulated, sheet-rocked and painted. Since the installation of each bay would take several days, we erected temporary walls to protect the space during non-working hours.

Result:

New interior walls were erected and the 6 bays and storefront were installed.

The Details in Curved Windows

Curved operating window units are not available from many manufacturers due to the high level of skill required to manufacture. How we solve and provide for our clients with Parrett Windows gorgeous craftsmanship.

Curved operating window units are not available from many manufacturers due to the high level of skill required to manufacture.

Parrett windows.jpg

Parrett has extensive experience with curved operating units, and especially curved hung window units. Commonly these units are specified with curved glass, but this unique window featured flat glass that utilized vertical true - divided lite grilles that were angled to allow the glass to follow the radius of the curved hung window frame/sash. Horizontal simulated - divided - lite grille bars were also utilized.

Parrett can build curved units to a standard radius or also follow construction templates. Their hung curved windows include:

  • A curve sash with an angled TDL bar configuration with flat glass.

  • A sash chain and a sash limit device.

  • All windows components available with curved windows including accessories like jamb extensions, subsills, and exterior casings.

Case Study: 1871 Cast-Iron Building

Historical Windows was contracted to furnish and install a storefront and 12 oversized operational windows customized to replicate the building’s original historical design.

1871 Italianate Cast-Iron Building, Mercer Street, Soho Historical District

Challenge:

Historical Windows was contracted to furnish and install a storefront and 12 oversized operational windows customized to replicate the building’s original historical design.

Solution:

We matched the profile of the new windows with the original window frames left in the existing openings. Parrett Weight and Chain Windows with 8” radius corners at the head were fabricated to support the weight of the sashes. New knives were created to produce custom exterior brick mould casings that conformed with the existing.  The windows were boomed to each individual floor since the size of the frames prohibited transporting them through the interior of the building.

Result:

New weight and chain windows and a customized storefront were installed. All profiles were approved by the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission.
